Default College! How much does undergrad matter?

Help me, I'm torn between two schools.

I currently live in Central New York.

I got offered full tuition at University At Buffalo for four years. So I only have to pay for room, and board. So I can get a college degree pretty cheap.

But I feel love with University of Washington - Seattle. It's ranked 6th in nation for my major, computer science. But it costs 33k a year. Is it worth spending that kind of money on undergraduate?

Thanks!

If you're confident you'll keep up a good (read: 3.7+) GPA, take Buffalo. Graduate schools will care much more about your grades in that respect.

If you're unsure of your abilities there, and think you might have a lower GPA, maybe a 2.7-3.3 or so, I'd personally go with Seattle, but whatever.

Talk to your parents, gather a good sense of the financial situation, and then look at each school in depth.

I'm pretty sure I'll kick ass at Buffalo with ease.

What I'm concerned about is say I graduate with a 3.9 or 4.0. Will I be able to get a job? UB seems to only be known in NY state...

Right now, with the economic situation, people graduating from an Ivy League school with a 3.9 or 4.0 are going to have trouble finding a job depending on what their major was. Grad schools look more at GPA then what school it was from.

what school you went to makes almost no difference.....however, the people you connect with at the school might----getting a good job is all about networking now---who do you know who knows whom?
If its were my choice I would pick the free ride, its much nicer to leave school with almost no debt (having been there and done that).

which ever you choose---good luck.

I second this... loans are a pain in the A$$ and they seem to never go away.

Just paid mine off a couple of years ago and I am Ancient

That bold part, if you go to a cheap school (i am not familiar with the new york one you are going to), pardon me for being too realistic, all the people you meet will be "cheap" and of no importance in the society. So, in a sense, it does matter what school you go to dear, and weather you want to rub shoulders with those "important" people to get ahead or not. it sucks but its reality.

If you want the best networking instead of the best bargain, then you should go for MIT.
Tuition is just under $37k and it is hard to beat listed on a resume.

BUT, if you are going for a master's degree right after college, in the end, it will matter more from which school you get that degree.

A 4.0 from Buffalo will get you a better master's program school, than a 3.0 from Stanford. The master's is where you want to be able to afford a top school.
